This is a TED talk that I absolutely LOVE! I first saw it a while back and have watched it many times since. It’s one of my favourites, it’s inspiring, it’s life changing, and I hope you feel as moved as I did by watching! Enjoy!

GROW: Lettuce
I think lettuce is very underrated, particularly good, crisp, crunchy, juicy, fresh lettuce. It’s not uncommon to find slightly sad, wilted, or limp lettuce in salads and sandwiches these days, dressed up in the hopes that we wont notice whats hiding beneath and holding up all our nuts, seeds, protein, vegetables and sauce. I’ll even admit to it myself actually, hiding saggy lettuce underneath a diversionary flavour sensation, not intentionally, usually because I didn’t get to it in time. Hmm, it’s not like I forgot there was lettuce in my fridge, but my attempts at making a fresh salad everyday can be thwarted by invitations to lunch or dinner, or there’s been the lure of additional ingredients which have overridden that of my humble lettuce, or my tastebuds have had other ideas all together. Like cake! Continue reading
GROW: Green!!
GROW: New Moon Planting
For Christmas I was gifted with a sensational growing tray for my start-up garden! It has lots of little spaces for planting my seeds, a nice big domed lid so that I have (a little more) control over the growing conditions of my seedlings, and air vents to (help) adjust the humidity!
How much Mother Nature actually allows me to temper her dramatic swings up here in the tropics is yet to be seen!
I have been eager to plant my seeds and get my garden up and fruiting, however some previous failures Continue reading
LIVE: Travelling Gardener, Happy Garden.
So in a wicked twist of dejavu I find myself again looking down the runway, another trip away fast approaching; and the innocent faces of my seedlings as they peer through sleepy eyes, opening them to the light as they look up at me for the first time. Their lives now precariously dependant upon my ability to read their needs; to water, feed, love, care and tend to their fragile systems… at least until they are a little bit stronger!
The last time I attempted “prepared self-sufficiency” the results were dismal. Rather than flourish in the cool, moist, protected environs of the vacated bath tub my ‘plant-lettes’ sought growth of a different type; the fuzzy, Continue reading
GROW: Spring forth joyously my loves!!
I HAVE SEEDLINGS!!!!
YAY!!! So after about a week (give or take, and forgive me as I’m writing this past tense!!) of tender love and care; and moving my little pots from the shade to the morning sun, and back to the dappled afternoon sun/ shade where there is a gentle breeze…. We have lift off!!!
I am SO impressed with the progress my sweet little darlings are making!!
Check out my baby tomato!!! His little green fingers are stretching for the sky!!! I can already taste the bright red, juicy, ripe fruits Continue reading
PLANT: Seeding my life.
Well hello!!!
I’m very excited! In my quest to live ever simply, sustainably and in deeper connection with my environment, my needs, and my food I HAVE PLANTED MY FIRST SEEDS! Literally!
I took a trip to Enviro-Mart (which is an incredible treasure trove of everything you could possibly need for inside your home, outside your home, on your body, in your body, and on your bookshelf!!!) to purchase a nice big bag of organic potting mix. I then took myself Continue reading
RAW: Cheering for cheese-less cheese… and other yumminess!
Happy Thursday!!
I did mean to write this pretty much the day after the last post… life clearly had other plans however! So in the interests of those left salivating over the kitchen prep on the last one, here’s what came from out gallant efforts in the kitchen. Christie and Nikki do vegan lasagne! I would say ‘raw’ lasagne but I did cook up a mean nutritional (savoury) yeast (cheese-less) ‘cheese’ sauce! I say ‘cheese’ because I’m sure that unassuming cheese eaters would not spot the difference if it was layered in anyway! That and I caught my ‘meat-eating, milk-drinking, McDonald loving chef flat-mate’ with his fingers in the pot! HA! Go nutritional yeast!!
So we layered the eggplant, sliced broccoli, green leaves, and alternated with pesto, tomato sauce and drizzled in Continue reading
ENJOY: Happy Savoury Saturday!
Hello again!
I’m back, for the third time in a week maybe, or close to it! I think you’d call this “on a roll!!” It’s a delightful Saturday afternoon, I’m sitting on the lounge with a cup of herbal tea, a few little dark chocolates from CoffeeWorks (…mmm, dark ginger bark!), have just enjoyed a 10minute nana nap, am listening to Vicki Christina Barcelona soundtrack via Christie’s laptop on the opposite couch, and there’s a slight breeze rustling through the open blinds. 5pm on a Saturday in Cairns, a truly magical time.
Today has been lovely. We went to a yoga class and ‘grew’ a few inches this morning, my body left feeling looser than when it arrived; Continue reading
